Run Girl Run

I have decided, when I grow up I wanna be just like dear Miss Pippa y'all.

Today I bought the September 2011 issue of Runners World. On page 18 is a small fun fact section called The Intersection and there was Pippa -

Her fun fact?

Fit for Royalty

Pippa Middleton races in Scotland's
Highland Cross Challenge.
She completes the 20-mile run
and 30-mile bike ride in 5:07,
finishing in the top 15 women.

Ummmmm hello?!?! That is awesome! You run Pippa and hopefully, one day, I'll be able to keep up with you!

On a side note I wonder what her running music playlist is. I'm interested to know what motivates her through 50-miles.

We Ran

Today was incredible. In 90+ heat 5,000 people... men, women, and children ran and/or walked in memory of the 600+ screaming eagles who passed away, represented by flags in the middle of the division parade field. It was worth every step... I am also very proud of C who ran beside me! Couldn't of had a better running partner!

C showing me he was drinking his water.

A photo of part of the flags representing each of the 600+ soldiers who died overseas while stationed here.

C and I after running a mile in 90+ southern heat and humidity.

Year two down in memory of my friend and in memory of all fallen soldiers. I plan on running this run until I no longer can. So until next year -

I Got Bored

This is what happens when you can't sleep.

I am back on the bandwagon to loosing the rest of this weight and wanting to be healthy enough to run 13.1 miles. I've always wondered what 150 lbs would look like (Its been a long time since I have seen 150 on a scale and whats left to loose is around 25 lbs). So I uploaded my most recent picture from my last trip to Ft. Benning (that showed my whole body). Filled in the stats, like height and current weight, then I slide the bar showing I wanted to loose 26 lbs and put myself right in the middle of the "normal" BMI category.

These two pictures were my results

(Left) Before (or current weight): 175 lbs
(Right) After (or future weight): 149-150 lbs

What do y'all think? My legs really thinned out, not to mention my waist. I'm sold! Off to the gym I go in the morning and if I do well, maybe I'll treat myself to some new Nike Running Shorts. A girl can dream. :)

Update: Gym Dilemma

I have such a great husband.

All the way from Afghanistan T messaged me to let me know that I could keep my YMCA membership

AND add CAC!

Seems he read my blog :)

So this week I am heading over to CAC and starting up my new-old membership again!

Maybe we can even get in some outside pool time... :)

OUTSIDE pool I have missed you!

Happy Tuesday y'all

Gym Dilemma

I am torn.

I am stuck between two gyms and if it didn't sound so crazy I would beg my husband to let me join both.

Here is my problem -

My son is 8 going on 31 9 and has been tagging along with me to the CAC gym for the last five or so years. The daycare for the little children (newborn - six) is great but once your child turns seven they are sent upstairs to the kids club. The club is a small little room on one of the top floors of the gym overlooking the racquetball courts.

This room was fun for a while but once the novelty wore off of being a big kid my child hated it. The Wii was broken, board games were missing pieces making them non playable, the toys were sparse and usually fought over. So that only left the handful of big kids watching TV with the "babysitter" or coloring. In the words of my eight year old even I can see that the kids club is lame.

So I ventured out and settled on signing up for the YMCA. The kids club is incredible! Rock climbing wall, ping pong, fooze tables, Wii, XBox 360, arts and crafts, movies, basketball courts, vending machines with healthy choices, and happy running kids - everywhere! C (my son) was finally happy.

I figured I could warm up to it. There were some definite pros but the smile on my child's face kept me from seeing the cons. So I quickly canceled my 5 year love affair with CAC and moved my business an extra 15 to 20 minutes down the road to the local YMCA.

But I am not happy.

I dread going some days.

Here is an easier way to break it down (I'm a list maker). Some pros and cons to both Gyms:

YMCA

Pro:

1. Smaller weight room - doesn't feel so overwhelming
2. Newer, rarely broken down equipment
3. Spin Class - enough said
4. Different classes like power yoga and classes involving serious weights called power lift
5. Personal trainers
6. Pool with water slides and lifeguards
7. Upstairs track
8. Basketball courts
9. Awesome Kids programs
10. Big locker rooms
11. Separate saunas
12. Whirlpool
13. Group training
14. Good parking

Cons:

1. 30 minutes max on each cardio machine - and during peak time the people waiting for the treadmills can not only be sensed but make you feel rushed.
2. Pool is smaller meaning you have to swim around unattended kids
3. No small individual TV's on each piece of cardio equipment - huge bummer
4. Personal trainers are great but not as flexible as promised when it comes to my forced single mom military lifestyle. This has kept me from renewing my once three times a week program.
5. If not an expert at using weight machines or knowing what to do they are rendered useless, hence you need a personal trainer.
6. Crowded
7. I now take a total 30 minute drive to work out.
8. No outdoor pool
9. Group training is an extra cost
10. Not as many times to choose from for classes

CAC

Pro:

1. Friendly staff - who have also become my friends over the years
2. My friends
3. CARDIO CINEMA ROOM with no time limit for machines
4. Individual cardio TV's on each machine
5. Juice Bar
6. LARGE indoor pool
7. Outdoor pool
8. Racquetball court
9. Outdoor sand volleyball
10. HUGE weight room - that you don't need a personal trainer for
11. Great classes taught more frequently
12. Nice locker rooms
13. Individual, private, whirlpools and saunas
14. Group training is free
15. Closer location

Con:

1. Crowded cardio equipment
2. Frequently broken equipment
3. Overwhelming amount of weight equipment
4. No basketball court
5. No spin classes
6. Not the same classes offered in work out room
7. Less than stellar older kids programs
8. No personal trainers
9. No upstairs track
10. Hard to find parking some days

Do you think I would be crazy to ask T if we can be members of both the Y and CAC? Is it strange to pay close to $140 in gym membership fees total? My mom doesn't think so because in my hometown it is not uncommon for just two people to pay $140 for one gym let alone in our town having two family memberships at two separate gyms - seems like a bargain to her. I also have met a lot of people who are members of both as well.

To help with your opinion I want to point out I love the gym and do/have use/used my memberships daily.

New Running Kicks and an Extra Buy

The past couple of runs that I have attempted left me with hurting feet and shins (a sure sign that your shoes are up for renewal) so I have been reading the running websites to find a new replacement. I ended up making a list of shoes I wanted to try on from Reebok, Nike, New Balance, Asics, and Brooks.

I started at Dick's Sporting Goods because they carried the running shoe Runners Magazine gave top pick to this year. Once I laced up the Brooks Ravenna 2 I was in love and abandoned all the other choices on my list. These shoes were light, comfortable, and didn't slide or flip on my foot.

Now here's where I got a great deal...

I am not a huge fan of our local Dick's because the customer service when you need help is very poor (I had to find my own shoes which took me a few minutes). Although the store is clean and fairly well stocked. Plus they don't have many discounts that extend past their own sign up customer discount program (which I am a part of).

From doing my research and calling around I decided to go back to our Finish Line. The service is superb, the store is clean, and the knowledge/help of the staff extends past your purchase. Even though they didn't have the shoes in stock they were able to order them and ship them to my home. The employees even agreed to cut my inserts to fit my shoes when they arrive.

For savings Finish Line has a great Winners Circle sign up program and our local store offers a 20 % military discount. For the shoes and inserts with tax cost me around $140. Once discounts were applied I paid $108.

I had budgeted $150.

So with my extra money I bought these Nike shorts at Dick's which were 20% off giving me a grand total of $31 with tax.

That's a total of $139... $11 below my budget :)

Which later I didn't realize I would need when I had to re buy my textbooks for fall semester this afternoon but that is a whole other blog post y'all.

Being Fit: A Few Wise Words on Diet and Exercise and Southern Girl Favorites

A Few Wise Words
(From my personal trainer Christie)

DIET BASICS

Sugars are the REAL devil of any diet.... start by cutting back on sodas, fruit juices, candy, etc... one thing I always to do my fruit juice is looking for NO SUGAR ADDED on the labels first, then comparing sugar content of the different brands, and then I dilute it when I do drink it.  Take 6 to 8 oz of your favorite juice and add about 2-4 oz of cold water and mix, you probably won't really notice and after awhile, a full glass of pure juice will begin to taste too sweet.

Full flavor Gatorades and such are ok in MODERATION... I don't recommend them at all though, they're mostly sugar and sodium and the chances are you won't be training for a dicathalon, so you really don't need them to begin with.

If you are craving something sweet or you do want to have juices/anything sugary, try to have them as early in the day as possible in order to burn them off.  Simple concept: if you want something sugary, look for sugar content on the label.  Try to stick to 10-15 g of sugar per snack.  As you probably know, your blood sugar level fluctuates throughout the day... the more you keep it in balance, the less you will weigh.

If you are a big soda fan, Cherry Coke Zero is delicious... it does have fake sugar in it, but trust me, this is better than the sugars and calories in regular Coke.  Crystal Light is a staple in my diet, I looove it... there are some good ones out there, trust me.  Stevia (the natural sugar that comes from a leaf) is actually a really great substitute for tea, coffee, anything you want to sweeten.

Water... drink it.  Sounds silly, but the more you drink, the more full you will feel.  If I'm about to sit down and eat even the slightest amount of junk food, I'll have a glass of cold water beforehand.  You'll eat less, but still get your craving taken care of.  There is no defeating a craving when it strikes, even the healthiest individuals can't live off of fish and salad every day.  The trick here is to eat it slowly, it takes the stomach 15 minutes to signal the brain that it is full once you've begun eating.

Anything that's high in fiber is GOOD.  Fiber One bars, oatmeal, Kashi cereal, etc.  Same concept as water, it keeps you feeling full and less likely to give into cravings.  Just remember... 35 g or so per day is your goal.  You also get fiber from green leafy veggies, broccoli, etc.

Protein is a MUST.  Same concept as water and fiber, SATIETY... you feel fuller longer and are less likely to eat junk.  Aim for your body weight in protein daily.  This sounds like a lot, but since protein is less calorie dense than fat, you can eat more of it.  I eat a lot of boiled eggs, tuna, turkey, chicken, and even some red meat every once in awhile.  You will want to consider a light protein shake after your workouts to help you with soreness/recovery.  Let me know if you decide to grab some, I have a few favorites.

Last but not least, carbs... these are NOT your enemy, if you choose the right ones.  Your body NEEDS carbohydrates to function; however, most people do not realize that there are carbohydrates in fruits and veggies, and they forget to take these into account when they are looking over their diet.  Whole wheat, whole grain, and oats... are pretty much the only carbs you want to eat... however, I still eat my white pastas occasionally, again, in moderation.  They affect your blood sugar level differently, meaning they break down more quickly and are more rapidly converted to sugar, leading to blood sugar spikes.

EXERCISE BASICS

Cardio - 2 or 3 days per week... aim for 30 to 45 minutes of moderate/high intensity every time.  The treadmill, jogging/walking, swimming, stationary bike, and group exercise classes are the best options, the elliptical is ok but because your range of motion is very limited, you have to do a lot more work (time wise) to burn the same amt of calories on a treadmill, etc.  What I like to do is get on the treadmill, start at about 3.0 speed and 0 incline, walk for about 5 minutes to warm up... then every 3 minutes or so, increase the incline 3 intervals, bump the speed up to 3.3 and keep on going this way until you're at 15.0 (the highest a treadmill goes)... then start going back down.  You can do something similar with running.  This is a MUCH better option than trying to run at a slow speed constantly for 30 min.  If you have to sprint/run for a minute or two and then walk, then repeat, you're much better off.  The reason being is that this will keep your intensity higher than trying to simply walk or jog slowly.  Higher intensity = greater calorie burn.

Weight training - about 3 days/week.  I like to break mine into upper body, lower body, and a total body circuit day.  YOU WILL LOSE MORE WEIGHT DOING WEIGHT TRAINING THAN DOING CARDIO.  It is proven.  Your muscles burn calories both DURING the workout, and for up to 12 to 24 hours AFTER the workout (weight training creates microtears in the muscle tissue that causes them to repair themselves, hence the prolonged calorie burn).  You will NOT get bulky... I promise.  Don't be concerned about this, you'd have to eat CRAZY amounts of protein, lift CRAZY heavy weights, etc etc in order for this to happen.  Men have a LOT more testosterone than women, this is what causes muscle mass... so don't sweat it.

I know this is a lot of information, but take things slowly, ask lots of questions, and remember to have fun.  Instead of doing regular cardio on a treadmill, try a spin class... group exercise is ALWAYS motivating and fun.  Remember, little changes... park further away at the grocery store, grab a yogurt instead of M&Ms, and focus on the progress you're making rather than the weight on the scale... you will lose inches much more quickly than pounds... and who doesn't want to lose dress sizes?  :-)

Southern Girl Favorites

Being Fit: Great Gear

Hi Y'all!

For the past year or so I have been working at being healthy. In 2009 I weighed 220 lbs, by spring of 2010 I had dropped down to 198 lbs. I knew that was not enough, so I set a goal of 150 lbs and got to work.

In this process I have come across some great gear and some not so useful things. Here are a few of my reviews with a few things I would love to try!

HELLO! An MP3 player makes working out sooooo much more enjoyable. I have several Ipods but the one I tend to use the most, just because it is so convenient, is my Iphone with SkullCandy earbuds and Nike armband. On long runs I love my light Ipod Shuffle.

I love running in Asics, so much that I talked one of my girlfriends into recently trying on a pair (she fell in love with her Asics too and bought them). Regardless of what shoes you get money should never be an issue. I always spend around $100 for a good pair. These shoes are THE MOST important things you will wear. Also, never leave without a new pair of inserts. I spend about $20 on mine.

If I have to share my favorite warm weather work out gear Nike Tempo shorts and Under Armor are my favs! They are light materials and super comfy, especially in this summer heat.

Sweaty Bands are something I have been dying to try. I've always said my first headband will be worn on my first half marathon. I really hope to run the Nashville Women's Half Marathon very soon!

Garmin makes the best watches. If you have goals to be healthy this watch will help you to visualize your progress. Not to mention that beating the stick figure man has become my ultimate goal every time I run!

Great running shoes need great socks. These are my favorites mostly because they keep me from blisters. The back lip which prevents the socks from sliding down into your shoes is brilliant! One less thing to worry about making your run/workout that much more enjoyable!

I am a water bottle snob. The only requirement is that the bottle fits in EVERY cup holder on EVERY machine!

I am also a gym towel snob. I just found these online and think they are the best! What fun motivation! Just visit Words to Sweat By to purchase your own.
